An Algerian newspaper prosecutes a cartoonist for unpublished cartoon!!

cartoonist Djamel Ghanem

Tuesday, November 12, 2013, the examining magistrate in the city of Oran, the second largest city in Algeria, decided to place the cartoonist Djamel Ghanem under judicial control on charges of insulting the president and dishonesty, due to a complaint filed by the management of newspaper "La voix de l'oranie" issues in French in which he works for years voix-oranie.com
The cartoon included his view over a dialogue between a "diapers" shop owner and a customer, where the owner said to the customer "For what age do you need diapers?", then the customer replied "The fourth", in reference to the possibility of candidacy by the Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for a fourth term.
Surprisingly, the cartoon has not been published, while the management of the newspaper found it in cartoonist's archives without being submitted to the editorial department, therefore the newspaper hurried to file the complaint!!
The cartoonist Djamel Ghanem reported to Al Quds Al Arabi newspaper that the background of this case is due to a dispute with the newspaper because they did not fulfill their administrative and legal obligations stipulated in the Labor Law, or even with regard to the procedures for the work of journalists set by the Ministry of Information recently, explaining that he did not get his dues agreed for years, since he was working in the English and French editions of the newspaper, where he was only receiving part of his dues. However, in order to disable him, the management of the newspaper began to look for anything that charging him. Additionally, he added that the management of the newspaper began to cease his salary and stop him from working by the end of September.
